Lionheart Award

Recipient for 2020 is Richard Dunn

Lionheart Award History

The birth of this prestigious award can be attributed to the covert deliberations between Sask and Wayne in 2009. They were searching for a suitable form of recognition for outstanding service to the association by individuals, namely Al d’Eon, founder and chairman of the association from 1996 to 2003 and W/C Bob Middlemiss, his outstanding military career, iconic service to the current squadron members as their Honorary Colonel and his meritorious service as our 427 Squadron Association Chairman.

Many suggestions were presented and were finally winnowed down to two choices. A pewter heart-shaped pendant with a rampant lion embossed or a suitably crafted certificate with the squadron crest and appropriate citation embodied. The certificate prevailed and for two reasons. First, the pendant would present too many problems in production (lion, text, cost and space), while the certificate could be modified as desired over time to suit the situation and recipient’s citation.

Over time, an unwritten protocol evolved and was accepted by the Executive Committee:

· Any Executive Committee member could nominate a candidate.
· The nomination had to include proposed wording for the citation.
· If a seconder came forward then the nomination was voted-on by the Exec. Comm.
· A simple majority carried the decision and then the Membership Chairman would produce the certificate.
· The Chairman would then make a formal presentation at the next GOL.
